It's encouraging when filmmakers strive to create something imaginative and exciting, even with limited resources. Sadly, the production team behind Money Plane seemed hampered by budgetary constraints. The recognizable actors—Kelsey Grammar, Denise Richards, and Thomas Jane among them—appear as though they filmed their parts on separate days at isolated spots. Similar to several of Bruce Willis’s more recent projects, the principal performers have their scenes scattered throughout the movie, often confined to a small number of locations, which gives the impression of greater involvement than truly exists. I seriously doubt Denise Richards spent more than a few hours shooting her role. An exterior that's supposed to be an art gallery is obviously a rundown transport facility, and its interior—along with several others in the film—are generic rooms decorated with drapes intended to hide unwanted elements. A significant portion of the story unfolds within a plane interior set, which looks like one of those frequently rented spaces common in Hollywood movies and television shows over the past few years. Despite these shortcomings, the plot moves along reasonably well, and there are some effective action sequences featuring close-quarters fights that recall the editing style and impact of the train compartment fight in From Russia With Love (1963). A vein of very dark humor also permeates the film; for instance, the resolution of a Russian roulette game, a detailed description of one of the things the gamblers can wager on, and a misunderstanding between a villain and his subordinate are particularly amusing. The acting is generally acceptable, though not outstanding, and Kelsey Grammar in particular resorts to shouting and grand pronouncements when it’s unnecessary. Katrina Norman stands out as one of the crew tasked with dismantling the Money Plane, and she's an actor I plan to watch for in future projects. Thanks to its quick 82-minute runtime, this film largely manages to overcome its budgetary issues to become a diverting and darkly humorous action adventure. As an ambitious lower-tier movie, I mostly found it quite enjoyable.
