Reno on Money Monster

6/10 · Sep 9, 2016

Jodie Foster’s performance as the ship's captain was excellent. It seems she could have also acted in the film; instead, that role went to Julia Roberts. Having George Clooney on board for a key part made it one of the strongest collaborations I’ve seen, and the movie proved to be quite enjoyable. It exceeded my initial expectations, and I now feel I should have rated it higher. What's certain is that it was designed primarily for audiences looking for an entertaining experience, not necessarily to impress critics. The story unfolds with a real-time narration, beginning on an ordinary morning in a newsroom studio where financial expert Lee Gates intends to offer investment advice. The broadcast is interrupted when an intruder storms the set and takes Gates hostage. He demands answers related to statements made during a previous show, which apparently cost investors everything. The way this complex situation resolves itself, with some intense moments toward the finish, was well-handled. Clooney and Roberts both delivered solid performances, but Jack O’Connell stood out considerably. He's been doing impressive work in recent films, and I hope he continues on this path. The plot draws inspiration from a genuine market anomaly, though it’s adapted for cinematic purposes, transforming it into a crime thriller with compelling characters that significantly contribute to its appeal. The writing felt grounded because it portrayed how ordinary people react when they can't grasp the language or explanations provided by financial professionals. There are deliberate moments of suspense, like wondering what will happen next. Despite being a serious thriller, there are also lighter touches. Who you end up rooting for is your choice, but the film maintains an engaging pace and keeps you invested throughout. It might not be among the very best films released this year, but it’s definitely worth watching if you're seeking entertainment. 6/10
