Wuchak on Moms' Night Out

7/10 · Mar 19, 2018

It's an entertaining film centering on three moms attempting to have a simple evening out. Released in 2011 and helmed by The Erwin Brothers, “Moms’ Night Out” is a dramedy set in Birmingham, featuring Sarah Drew, Patricia Heaton, and Andrea Logan White as the mothers. Sean Astin, Robert Amaya, and Kevin Downes portray the husbands and a friend while looking after the kids. Alex Kendrick takes on the role of the pastor, Sammi Hanratty plays the teen daughter, Trace Adkins appears as a biker, and David Hunt is a cabbie offering assistance. Andrea Logan White also portrays a friend to the three moms, with Harry Shum Jr. appearing as her former romantic interest. This dramedy caters to families and has some edgy qualities along with subtle faith-based undertones—mainly showcased in one funny church scene and a brief conversation toward the film’s conclusion. The storyline involving clumsy fathers felt repetitive and didn't ring true; it seemed like the kids weren't well-managed. However, there are enjoyable aspects, such as seeing the main female character struggling with her own high standards and feeling burdened by them. The scene in the church bathroom is particularly funny. It’s relatable—have you ever lost control over something small only to be mortified when someone witnessed it? There's another amusing sequence where a person’s actions are misinterpreted by others, creating a false impression. Overall, “Moms’ Night Out” provides amusement and some genuinely funny moments alongside a touch of food for thought. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 38 minutes and was filmed in Birmingham, Alabama, as well as Pelham, located just to the South. Jon Erwin and Andrea Nasfell wrote the screenplay. Grade: B
