It’s really entertaining to see how much the animators and writers draw from Polynesian legends. The character "Moana" is the King’s daughter, and he worries that a long-standing curse will threaten their island home if anyone goes beyond the reef protecting them. However, it seems like this curse might be unavoidable. Their coconuts begin to spoil, they run out of fish – they're facing possible starvation unless someone investigates. At the same time, the ocean sends Moana a distinct message, convincing her that she needs to leave and end the trouble permanently. Her initial task is finding "Maui," the playful demigod—who initially caused this whole situation. They might have a shot at restoring nature's balance and easing the gods’ anger if they work together. Many adventures unfold – practically everyone gets soaked (often), there are lots of acrobatic sequences as they try to avoid pirates and a creature that throws rocks, all while occasionally singing songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and others that emphasize local customs and beliefs. The story moves along quickly and is frequently funny—there's even some subtle sarcasm present, and the animation is bright and lively. It’s straightforward with not much real danger, but that doesn’t matter – it's a pleasant film for kids of any age!
