When Moana discovers that Pacific Island society is afflicted by a curse from the god Nalo, she must assemble a small group of loyal companions and find Maui before she can locate the lost island of Morefutu. There, she hopes to end the dark force that has kept her people isolated for generations—despite evidence suggesting they once had contact with others somewhere—long ago! Heihei the chicken and Pua the pig are along for the ride, but Moana will need more assistance, so Moni, a knife-wielding engineer, and Keke, a pessimistic farmer, join them. They embark on numerous adventures, encountering coconut warriors who shoot poisoned darts – the Kakamora – as well as a giant clam, the winds and seas controlled by Matangi and her bat army, all making things difficult. Fortunately, Matangi has also clashed with Maui, so perhaps they can now work together; but will his massive hook and tattoos give him the power to help Moana defeat their formidable enemy? What do you suppose? The thing is, we aren’t watching this for suspense or danger from the plot—we're here for the enjoyable characters and the interesting relationship between the main girl and her super-strong demigod. Unfortunately, that element is noticeably absent in this disappointing sequel. The special effects are excellent, and the adventure moves at a good pace; however, the story feels underdeveloped, and the new characters don’t quite make up for it as they wander along without really exploring or using the rich culture and mythology available to them. The music doesn't have the same impact either, and while some of the lyrics are amusing, there isn’t a standout song for either main character. There's the power ballad "Beyond" and Maui gets "Can I Get a Chee Chee," but they don’t have the delightful silliness of Lin Manuel Miranda's songs from eight years ago. It is perfectly enjoyable and should be seen in a theater to appreciate the creatively detailed animation, but I think it will be completely forgettable and likely just pave the way for another installment, as surely as seagulls follow fishing boats.
