The initial Mission: Impossible works best when it concentrates on a more personal narrative, shifting away from large-scale action sequences in favor of intrigue, covert operations, and deception. This first film in the series feels smaller in scope than later films, creating a sense of suspense that’s closer and more immediate. It successfully combines elements of a spy story, a whodunit, and a robbery movie to create an exciting and engaging experience. A feeling of distrust permeates the film as Ethan Hunt repeatedly finds himself double-crossed while attempting to identify the person responsible for killing his colleagues and stopping further deaths.
