This spy/caper thriller featuring Tom Cruise delivers a solid experience, although it includes some moments that felt a bit silly. The Impossible Missions Force is tasked with a mission at a Prague gala related to a CIA list of non-official cover identities, but things don't unfold as anticipated. Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and Clair Phelps (Emmanuelle Béart) join forces with two agents who have been cut off from the organization (Ving Rhames and Jean Reno) to retrieve the genuine NOC list from CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia. Their pursuit then leads them to London for more action involving a TGV train ride to Paris. Jon Voight and Henry Czerny appear as leaders of IMF, while Vanessa Redgrave portrays an arms dealer and Kristin Scott Thomas plays an IMF agent. “Mission: Impossible” (1996) drew loose inspiration from the television series that aired in the late 1960s and early 1970s, launching a successful film series with Cruise as its star. The movie contains complex conversations, spy equipment, high-class galas, dimly lit cobblestone streets, unexpected deaths, international travel, double agents, elaborate schemes, and impressive action sequences. I wasn’t thrilled by the repeated instances of characters revealing their true identities by having fake faces ripped off—it felt reminiscent of Scooby-Doo. A single instance might have been amusing, but three times seemed excessive. Aside from that one issue, it's a well-made spy/caper film; however, I found it overly complicated and lacking in relatable characters. The movie has a running time of 1 hour, 50 minutes, and filming took place in Prague, London, Pinewood Studios, various locations throughout England, McLean, Virginia, and Washington DC. GRADE: B-
