Initially, I really didn’t care for this film. My biggest issue with it—and still is—is that it doesn't capture the essence of a Mission Impossible movie. Spoilers follow! In the earlier installments, the team consistently achieved their goals, at least in my experience watching them. But this film begins with a significant setback. And to compound matters, we discover that Mr. Phelps, an original key character, is revealed to be a traitor. I felt quite let down by that. However, on a second viewing with my son, I found myself enjoying it considerably more. I still believe the writers made a questionable choice in introducing so many shocking plot twists, but if you can look past those aspects, it’s actually a pretty good film. Nevertheless, I don't think it truly embodies the classic Mission Impossible style of the series. It functions well as an action/thriller, though. Tom Cruise is quite effective as Ethan Hunt, and so are the other performers. He executes numerous impressive stunts, and there's a fair amount of high-tech gadgetry featured in the movie. Admittedly, some of the action sequences and stunts might be a little complicated, but it creates exciting visuals, and after all, this is fiction. If the film hadn’t been marketed as Mission Impossible, I probably would have rated it higher, but I can't entirely disregard how much it deviates from its original inspiration.
