The latest installment comes remarkably close to matching the quality of the initial film from two decades prior, following "Ethan" (Tom Cruise) as he faces scrutiny from the U.S. Government – specifically “Hunley” (Alec Baldwin), who aims to dismantle the IMF. Simultaneously, Ethan and "Luther" (Ving Rhames) are pursuing "Syndicate," a criminal group presenting a significant danger to national security and their own organization. With the assistance of "Benji" (Simon Pegg) and "Brandt" (Jeremy Renner), they encounter “Ilsa” (Rebecca Ferguson), who offers her help, but her motives remain unclear. What follows is a tightly paced action thriller that spans Morocco and Europe, culminating in a suspenseful resolution where trust becomes uncertain for everyone involved. Director Christopher McQuarrie appears to have drawn inspiration from the original television series; the collaborative efforts—even those of Pegg, who isn't always convincing—and the storyline feel more believable and engaging. The narrative possesses a greater depth and realism, and while Cruise occasionally looks somewhat disheveled, the story itself is genuinely thrilling rather than simply another vehicle for a star’s exuberance. Consistent with other films depicting U.S. Senate oversight, it humorously critiques the perceived lack of competence within that institution. There are moments of levity in the dialogue, and ultimately, this film has revitalized the series.
