The ‘Mission: Impossible’ films have stood the test of time, and they're a prime example of something getting better with age. It might be because Tom Cruise, at 56, continues to challenge himself physically for audiences. This is very clear in ‘Fallout,’ where his character, Ethan Hunt, feels like a superhero in the sixth installment. While the plot itself isn’t entirely original and includes familiar twists, ‘Fallout’ expands on what came before by reintroducing characters from past films, both allies and enemies, and introducing some new faces as well. Henry Cavill's portrayal of August Walker is a good fit for this world; he acts as a blunt force instrument to Ethan Hunt’s precision. His presence commands attention whenever he appears onscreen. Simon Pegg becomes a consistent figure in the series alongside Ving Rhames, whose characters Benji and Luther are more than just supporting players—they provide both humor and emotional depth. Alec Baldwin and Angela Bassett also leave their mark with brief appearances, but keep an eye out for significant roles by Rebecca Ferguson and Michelle Monaghan. Writer and Director Christopher McQuarrie gives each character room to develop while exploring their shared history, which makes them more relatable to viewers. This heightens the stakes when they face peril. McQuarrie also allows the story to unfold naturally, creating moments of calm before the action erupts. A key element of the series, and something McQuarrie excels at in this film, is the action sequences themselves. They’re carefully planned and executed with accuracy, even during intense hand-to-hand combat. Rob Hardy's camerawork beautifully complements these elaborate set pieces, sometimes showing the full scope of a scene and other times bringing you right into the middle of the action. This is enhanced by Lorne Balfe’s score, which creates tension by giving the iconic ‘Mission Impossible’ theme a sense of urgency. Having now directed two ‘Mission: Impossible’ films, McQuarrie's familiarity with the franchise and its characters has become an advantage for the series. The fact that many of the stunts are performed practically, often by Cruise himself and the rest of the cast, sets a new benchmark for action movies. ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ is a well-balanced combination of story, pacing, and acting, making it undeniably the strongest entry in the franchise so far, while also reinforcing Cruise's status as an action star.
