Costa-Gavras, an Academy Award recipient, delivers a fairly unsettling political story centered on "Ed Horman" (played by Jack Lemmon) and his daughter-in-law "Beth" (Sissy Spacek). They journey to Chile with the goal of locating Ed’s son, a writer who has been entangled in the events surrounding President Allende's removal from power. It doesn't take long for it to become obvious that this couple, who believe themselves to be loyal citizens, aren't receiving the assistance they anticipated from their government representatives abroad. As things unfold, there’s an understanding of how little they truly understood their son and also a realization of how one’s trust in their own country can be severely tested. Lemmon portrays his character's increasing desperation with remarkable clarity. Both he and Spacek rightly received Oscar nominations for their work in this compelling drama. I would have appreciated a more definitive ending, but maybe leaving it as is works better.
