Sandra Bullock seems to be genuinely enjoying herself in this film, portraying an FBI agent who frequently finds herself in trouble and gets drawn into a plot to stop something terrible from occurring at the "Miss America" competition. She’s assisted by the over-the-top charming Sir Michael Caine, playing her contact person who somehow manages to create something worthwhile out of a difficult situation. Together they enter this world full of superficiality, sexism, and absurdity, overseen by Candice Bergen in a brilliantly deceptive role, alongside William Shatner as her friendly associate. The movie takes pointed jabs at the shallow, stereotypical, and sexist viewpoints often associated with these kinds of events, while also showing that some of those involved aren’t quite as naive as they initially appear. Bullock is performing well; the music enhances the experience considerably – and for a breezy comedy, she and Benjamin Bratt almost succeed in making it work. Lower your expectations and you may find yourself entertained...
