John Chard on Miss Congeniality

7/10 · Jul 1, 2015

I haven’t felt quite so exposed in public since my birth! Miss Congeniality casts Sandra Bullock as FBI Agent Gracie Hart, tasked with infiltrating the Miss United States beauty pageant to stop a killer from committing terrible acts. The basic idea is familiar—like Pygmalion or My Fair Lady—it involves turning the unrefined Gracie into a believable contestant. This creates a lot of humor as she struggles against everyone and everything, including her own views on pageants, while being molded into someone she doesn't think she is. The suspense surrounding the identity of the loose killer remains compelling for much of the movie, and even when the danger becomes apparent and things turn dramatic, it’s still difficult to stop smiling. There are a lot of laughs, and Bullock has great chemistry with all her fellow actors. She’s an underrated comedic performer, and watching her connect with the entire cast is truly wonderful. There's a spark of something between her and Benjamin Bratt, playful antagonism with Ernie Hudson, a lively rapport with the other contestants, and especially hilarious interactions with Michael Caine, who plays a flamboyant stylist and consistently delivers laugh-out-loud moments in every scene he appears in. It doesn’t break any new ground for comedy, but it's pleasantly funny throughout, thanks to an exceptional cast that manages to extract more humor from the script than seemed possible. 7/10
