Nestled within a snowy Colorado landscape, celebrated writer “Sheldon” (James Caan) finds himself unexpectedly off the road and rescued—or so it seems—by “Annie” (Kathy Bates), a nurse who also happens to be an ardent admirer of his books. She readily volunteers her care, emphasizing that it’s a pleasure she's eager to provide. However, Sheldon gradually comes to suspect that Annie isn't being entirely truthful about who she is. He discovers he’s essentially a prisoner, cut off from the outside world, and when she begins suggesting he revive a character from one of his previous novels—well, her methods of convincing him are certainly distinctive. As “Sheldon” remains her captive, his publisher "Marcia" (Lauren Bacall) grows concerned, prompting a call to the local sheriff, which brings “Buster” (Richard Farnsworth) into the picture as he attempts to locate him. With Sheldon being kept under sedation and subjected to psychological distress, a frantic search ensues to find him, let alone get him out of his captor's grasp. James Caan’s performance is remarkable, particularly in the film's final moments, but it’s Kathy Bates’ unsettlingly sweet portrayal that truly dominates and makes this possibly my favorite adaptation of a Stephen King story. I generally thought those stories weren’t very deep, but here he has created some compelling characters for them to embody, and it also provides one of those scenes destined to become iconic in cinema. The starkness of the setting amplifies the unsettling atmosphere, and Rob Reiner successfully establishes and maintains a sense of suspense from relatively early on. It's definitely not suitable for sensitive viewers, nor perhaps for anyone who has ever developed a well-known fictional character.
