Julia Roberts seems genuinely amused in this updated take on the classic "Snow White" narrative. She portrays a sharp-tongued, villainous queen who has eliminated the king (Sean Bean – which isn’t necessarily a negative), and now governs the icy realm with her companion “Brighton” (Nathan Lane) while the princess, Lily Collins, matures. During a woodland stroll, the young woman meets Prince "Alcott" (Armie Hammer) and his friend "Napoleon" (Jordan Prentice). Brought to the palace, the queen develops an interest in the prince, but he is drawn to the princess, leading to “Brighton” being tasked with eliminating the queen’s competition. The story then loosely follows the familiar fairytale as she finds refuge with seven men of limited stature (their names have been altered), who pledge to assist her in reclaiming her kingdom and her love. Lane and Roberts have a pleasant rapport—almost like a stage show—but the rest feels rather ordinary. Collins and Hammer don’t particularly elevate the story, the dwarves are overly boisterous and rely on clumsy physical comedy, and while an effort was made to keep the tone cheerful, the script is excessively long and frankly quite slow-moving. The visual effects are decent, but as the queen frequently reminds viewers, snow should simply do what it’s meant to—fall! And it manages that adequately.
