Gregory Peck stars as "Stillwell" in this excellent thriller directed by Edward Dmytryk, which seems inspired by the style of Alfred Hitchcock. The story centers on a seemingly ordinary accountant who suddenly finds himself targeted—appearing on a death list for reasons unknown to him or the audience. Fortunately, he possesses an instinct for survival that allows him to seek help from experienced private investigator "Caselle" (Walter Matthau) as they attempt to unravel what appears to be a bizarre situation. The man struggles to make sense of things; his memories are fragmented, and his former workplace has disappeared. People mention individuals he doesn’t recognize, leaving him disoriented. Is any of this connected to the recent passing of charity leader "Calvin"? He is aware of his professional role but completely unclear about its nature—perhaps he works in politics? Slowly and methodically, he must evade those who are after him while trying to reconstruct his lost identity. Peck gives a strong performance as someone lacking psychological stability; he genuinely doesn't remember who he is, unsure of whom to trust or why these events are unfolding. His mounting frustration is evident, and the audience becomes increasingly invested in his situation. The conclusion feels somewhat anticlimactic, resolving things too neatly with a return to powerful corporate interests, but it remains an engaging film that also features early appearances from George Kennedy and provides Diane Baker with a brief chance to stand out.
