A baby, nicknamed “Totò,” is discovered by a compassionate woman who raises him until her death necessitates he enter an orphanage. He grows into a remarkably cheerful young man (played by Francesco Golisano). His consistently positive attitude and polite behavior often confuse the unhappy and grumpy people of postwar Milan, but things change when someone attempts to steal his small bag. Instead of fighting back, he gives it away, and is then invited to spend the night at the thief’s home. This leads him to a bustling community living in makeshift conditions on land damaged by bombing. Shortly after arriving, the wealthy "Mobbi" (Guglielmo Barnabò) appears; he has purchased the property and wants the shanty town eliminated! The police arrive, seemingly prepared for an eviction, but then his deceased “mother” makes an appearance from beyond—similar to the ghost of "Jacob Marley," though without any chains—and offers him a dove. This bird grants him considerable power, allowing him to humorously obstruct the greedy "Mobbi." He also quickly realizes that the people around him now desire various luxuries, including fur coats, radios, and vast sums of money. The film is enjoyable as it critiques poverty and avarice while celebrating honesty and kindness—and it’s genuinely amusing. Throughout much of the movie, Golisano's character evoked a sense of "Oliver Twist" combined with Chaplin’s “Tramp,” but always maintaining an optimistic outlook, making for about ninety entertaining minutes.
