There's a resemblance to the film “Legend” from 1985, but I seriously question whether the lead actor will consider this one of his better roles. It’s truly awful! Tom Hardy portrays "Theo"—apparently Theseus was unwilling to have his name associated with this mess—who embarks on a mission to enter the minotaur's complex maze and resolve the situation permanently, since it has already consumed his girlfriend, leaving him quite upset. He sets off, and so do we, into what can only be described as an utter disaster of a movie. This is a compelling narrative drawn from Greek mythology; it contains all sorts of adventure elements to draw upon—so how did Jonathan English fail to capitalize on such a promising foundation and create this poorly made, terribly written film with special effects that feel like they’re straight out of the 1980s television series "Blake's 7"? Tony Todd manages to convey an air of menace as the perpetually drugged King Deucalion, but the rest of the cast—including a brief appearance by Rutger Hauer as his father, “Cyrnan”—delivers performances that are simply laughable. A tagline like "Curse the God... Slay the Beast" promises so much more than this film provides—and I’m afraid even devoted fans of TH (or the also attractive Lex Shrapnel) will be searching for reruns of "Downton Abbey" on a streaming service.
