A feeling of mischievous enjoyment comes from the kind of social setting Basil Joseph is really good at creating as you watch Baiju and Rajesh Madhavan playing police officers, hanging around a roadside eatery waiting for someone to arrive and deliver a scolding, maybe even more. That person is a flower seller who’s supposed to meet his girlfriend at a bus stop. Whether or not that happens isn't really the focus of this wonderful scene which introduces almost everyone in the movie who needs an introduction. It's this creation of a world that I want to emphasize, and why Minnal Murali feels like something new for Malayalam cinema. With just as much attention given to both the main characters and supporting roles (particularly the two leads) and a plot that has some initial awkwardness but quickly gets going, Minnal Murali keeps up a consistent rhythm with a blend of understated humor, serious drama, and occasional observations about society. None of these elements really dominate as the story develops into a recognizable superhero storyline, which still doesn't feel unoriginal. The music and surprisingly good visual effects stood out to me while I was completely captivated by the artistry in how the story is told. Minnal Murali has brought a fresh energy to the superhero genre and I’m definitely enjoying it. Above all else, this is smart filmmaking; you find yourself appreciating all of the small and larger details that make up this celebratory combination. It's something you can use to avoid the predictable problems that often plague these kinds of stories. You notice how the story unfolds at a relaxed pace, explaining both the origins of the villain and the hero equally well—something I don’t usually see in this type of movie. Go see it; you will like it. (Reviewed after release on 22 Dec. Watched during its world premiere at the MAMI Year Round Programme.)
