Mindcage isn’t good. I didn’t hate it as much as I probably should have—the ending nearly changed my mind—mostly because of the actors. It's just not well-made. There seems to be something worthwhile at its core, and the winged creatures are visually interesting; however, they aren’t used effectively. One thing that works is Melissa Roxburgh’s performance, which remains consistently strong throughout. I hadn’t heard of her until recently, but I know Martin Lawrence, John Malkovich, and Robert Knepper quite well. These three actors have all been excellent in other projects, but not here. Malkovich stands out, though his character feels fairly standard. Lawrence delivers a very serious performance, which is different to see from him, but it doesn't quite fit; he seems miscast. Knepper is acceptable in a small role.
