The movie attempts to be an engaging psychological thriller, but doesn't quite succeed due to some problems. Martin Lawrence’s depiction of Detective Jake Doyle sometimes seems over-the-top and misses the fine points necessary for the character. Melissa Roxburgh, playing Detective Mary Kelly, gives a more realistic performance that adds a sense of balance to the movie. John Malkovich, as the imprisoned serial killer known as "The Artist," is reliably good in his part. Still, he doesn’t appear on screen enough, which prevents the character from being explored fully and leaves viewers hoping for more of his acting. The film's production values are fairly basic, and some technical issues hurt how it looks and sounds. The audio mixing has too much reverb in certain scenes, lowering the movie's quality and making it feel unfinished; there’s no sign that this was done on purpose by the filmmaker. Although Mindcage shows glimpses of what it could have been—like its moody environments and a couple of interesting story developments—these good parts are lessened by how the film is put together. It has difficulty holding the audience's attention, so watching it isn’t as rewarding as it should be.
