Alex Etel delivers a strong performance in this unusual story about money unexpectedly appearing from above. The film unfolds on the eve of the UK’s adoption of the Euro—a fantastical or horrific scenario, depending on how you view it—when bags filled with used twenty-pound notes begin to fall from the sky, totaling hundreds of thousands of pounds. Damian, played by Etel, and his friend Anthony (Lewis McGibbon) are decent boys, though not inclined to hand things over to the authorities, and they initially intend to use the money to assist those in need. As time runs out and they struggle to distribute it all, they begin involving their friends and family, which is when the narrative shifts toward a more cautionary tone. The film illustrates various facets of human nature when wealth enters the picture—and some of what’s displayed isn't particularly pleasant. There are moments of sharp wit in the writing; for instance, the young protagonist has a habit of speaking to saints, attributing his good fortune to them. Writer Frank Cottrell Boyce skillfully employs this innocence and generosity to examine how we behave when money becomes the central focus—whether it’s too little, too much, shared, or kept for oneself. The film is well-acted by the two young leads and features amusing, thought-provoking writing that isn't particularly striking but remains enjoyable.
