I can’t say that the movie is terrible; it’s certainly not the most captivating thing I've seen, but I don’t believe that’s what the filmmakers were aiming for. The entire story revolves around Frank, portrayed effectively by Michael Patrick. His mother passed away during his birth, and he never knew her—a plot device that could have easily resulted in a disaster. However, because of the solid performance from the actor portraying Frank, it managed to avoid that pitfall. In other family dramas with similar storylines, the child is typically constantly complaining and crying about not having a mother or father; but Frank seems more inquisitive than upset. He acts like an actual kid would in that situation, which is a simple yet positive aspect of the film. Then there’s V—I don't share the opinion that she’s a prostitute with a good heart; quite the opposite, she appears very lost and lacks confidence. Melanie Griffith was wonderful as V, and it felt like a departure from her usual roles. There isn't much to comment on regarding Ed Harris; he did what he could given how little there was for him to work with because, let’s be honest, the father is a rather dull character. Anne Heche’s role was intended to provide some humor, but it didn't succeed—instead, you find yourself wondering why she was even in the film. The same can be said for Malcolm McDowell. The movie focuses on the connection between V and Frank, which both actors portray convincingly. There are a few irritating scenes featuring Frank’s friends and Heche/MacDowell, but overall I think the film achieved its goal: to be a comforting family film, and it was a pleasant ninety minutes to watch.
