The movie boasts a strong cast and some genuinely funny moments, although it struggles with an overabundance of seriousness. I’m inclined to view 'Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates' favorably. The main actors deliver solid performances, and much of the humor lands well; however, its frequent attempts at sentimentality nearly undermined my overall impression. Zac Efron as Dave, Adam DeVine as Mike, Anna Kendrick as Alice, and Aubrey Plaza as Tatiana all have a good rapport. While their smaller groups don't always spark with chemistry, they function effectively during the comedic scenes. Efron and Plaza stood out among the performers, particularly Plaza, who fully embraced her part despite an inconsistent accent. Sam Richardson (as Eric), Lavell Crawford (as Keith), and Stephen Root (as Burt) also appear, though their roles are fairly minor—it’s still nice to see them in the picture. The film's downfall lies in its earnest storyline; it concludes with a hopeful sentiment, but that feeling doesn't translate onscreen. I didn’t establish any real connection with the characters, and Jake Szymanski & Co. would have been better off pursuing a purely comedic approach. It’s fine to aim for sincerity, but you need to make it work, which isn’t achieved here. Fortunately, the agreeable—though occasionally uneven—humor manages to save the movie from becoming another overly sentimental romantic comedy.
