Reno on Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates

6/10 · Oct 24, 2016

I’ll be straightforward: I did get some laughs out of it, though the movie itself wasn't particularly remarkable. To my eyes, this felt like a movie geared toward women, with Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza carrying the main roles. I genuinely enjoyed their performances, which is why I didn’t mind sitting through it, but as often happens, Zac Efron held things back. I won’t put all the blame on him, but his character and Adam Devine's didn't quite live up to what the premise suggested. They do end up getting their wedding date, but a more accurate title would have been something like 'Alice and Tatiana Goes for a Free Vacay.' It reminded me of ‘Bridesmaids,’ only with an excess of adult humor. The storyline was loosely inspired by actual events; that initial setup is just a gag to get things going. The promotional material was based on reality, but the rest of the story is made up. From there, the plot’s progression felt pretty nonsensical, though it's easier to overlook because it's intended as a comedy. The beginning especially drags, but it does improve somewhat later on, at least in terms of humor. Overall, I can’t really say it was bad or good enough to wholeheartedly suggest; it's just an okay way to spend some time, although certain viewers might find it irritating. 6/10
