This Disney film concerning “Kong Jr.” features Charlize Theron and Bill Paxton. A woman (Charlize Theron) who nurtured a giant gorilla named Joe from when he was very young transports him to an animal sanctuary in Southern California, assisted by a zoologist (Bill Paxton). Simultaneously, a poacher with a grudge against the creature (Rade Serbedzija) appears and sets things in motion that lead to destruction. "Mighty Joe Young" (1998) took inspiration from the 1949 film of the same name. I’m able to sit through it and find some enjoyment, accepting it as a gentler adaptation of King Kong—essentially presenting Kong Jr. However, even with its talented performers, impressive special effects, and plenty of action and adventure, the movie feels somewhat superficial, populated by characters who lack depth. The scene where a young boy gets trapped on a Ferris wheel and Joe has to come to his rescue just felt contrived to me. Nevertheless, it's still executed well for what it aims to be: a film intended for children (and the childlike in adults) about a gorilla that is endearing but also capable of being intimidating when needed. The movie’s length is 1 hour and 54 minutes; filming occurred in Kaua'i, Hawaii (for the African sequences), as well as Los Angeles, Hollywood, and Long Beach, California. GRADE: C+/B-
