A screenwriter living in New York City (played by Woody Allen) finds himself connecting with the young mother of his adopted son, who works as a prostitute (Mira Sorvino), and attempts to improve her circumstances. Simultaneously, his wife (Helena Bonham Carter) is preoccupied with her career as an art gallery curator and also engaging in flirtatious behavior with a coworker (Peter Weller). A group acting as a Greek chorus intermittently appears (featuring F. Murray Abraham and others), drawing parallels between the narrative and the story of Oedipus. “Mighty Aphrodite,” released in 1995, is an offbeat comedy taking place in Manhattan—which isn’t really unexpected given Woody Allen's involvement. The central storyline, as I briefly mentioned earlier, brings to mind “Hardcore” (1979), but without the same sense of seriousness. Helena and Mira both appear to be at their best and are visually striking, though in very different ways. The film is funny, heartwarming, and filled with irony. I thought the bold inclusion of a Greek chorus was well done; it’s something that not many filmmakers could manage successfully, but Woody Allen handles it naturally. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 35 minutes and was filmed in Manhattan, while the scenes featuring the Greek chorus were shot at Teatro Greco in Sicily, Italy. GRADE: B
