Midnight Special proved to be an enjoyable science-fiction movie, though it didn’t quite live up to what it could have been. The narrative of a father and son on the run was engaging and featured strong performances; Michael Shannon was particularly convincing as a parent willing to do anything for his extraordinary child. Dunst and Edgerton also delivered commendable work in their roles as the boy's mother and, I think, stepfather. The conversations felt natural, and the science-fiction aspects were well-integrated with the action sequences. The core idea, reminiscent of E.T., was intriguing. While the special effects were adequate, they weren’t exceptional. The soundtrack was nicely composed but not particularly memorable. Personally, I thought the movie dragged a bit at 1 hour and 52 minutes, and it would have benefited from being set in the seventies or eighties. These are just minor preferences, and you might wonder why the film didn't achieve its full potential. Ultimately, it came down to the ending; it felt underwhelming or incomplete. The characters had invested so much into this child, yet I was left without any real emotional investment in how things resolved. The bond between father and son was the most compelling part of the movie, and I believe that relationship deserved more prominence at the conclusion, but for some reason, they seemed to scale it back right at the very end. I would suggest this film to fans of science fiction as a worthwhile viewing experience. My rating is 3.5 stars.
