Midnight Run from 1988 stands out as a prime example of the buddy road movie genre. It’s an overlooked De Niro film, a lost gem from the eighties where everything just clicks into place—simply the best buddy comedy I've ever seen. De Niro and Grodin are unmatched; no other pairing in this kind of film has such a consistently entertaining rapport. They truly embody what it means to be a dynamic duo. Director Martin Brest allows his actors to shine, creating a movie where you can sense everyone’s enthusiasm for the project, allowing them to fully utilize their abilities, whether through improvisation or subtle visual acting. There's an undeniable chemistry between them. The score by Danny Elfman is a bizarre mix of Western and wacky race music, but surprisingly effective. It’s one of his very best soundtracks. The dialogue is sharp—some lines are so well-written they feel like handling something dangerous. The supporting cast is uniformly excellent, including John Ashton as the competing bounty hunter Marvin, Dennis Farina as mob boss Jimmy Serrano with his distinctive style, and Yaphet Kotto portraying the perpetually frustrated FBI agent Alonso Mosely; it’s a remarkably strong ensemble operating at their best. The film's rating on major movie websites doesn’t do it justice; I suspect De Niro’s fans weren’t expecting him in a comedy. But they were mistaken! This film demonstrates that he had so much to offer the action/comedy side of filmmaking, and maybe he just needed someone like Charles Grodin to complement him. Regardless, it's clever, humorous, and even touching at times (I challenge anyone not to be moved by the daughter/father reunion). There’s nothing else quite like it from the eighties in the action/comedy category, with plenty of action sequences that Brest executes skillfully to keep things exciting. A collection of characters wonderfully portrayed by a superb cast, and an ending that feels completely right—Midnight Run, despite my personal preference, is a defining film for its type. Those who disagree can just shake their heads! 10/10
