A killer is preying on young women along Interstate 10 in northern Florida. The victims, mostly prostitutes who work rest stops catering to truckers, are discovered by a dedicated state officer (Emile Hirsch) and an equally committed FBI agent (Megan Fox), who join forces to track down the perpetrator. Lukas Haas also appears, with Bruce Willis having a brief role. "Midnight in the Switchgrass" (2021) is a crime drama/thriller that had a $15 million budget and draws inspiration from serial killer Robert Ben Rhoades, known as The Truck Stop Killer. It blends elements of the detective story found in “Kiss the Girls” (1997), with touches reminiscent of “The Onion Field” (1979), “Breakdown” (1997) and “Butchers” (2020). Emile Hirsch and Lukas Haas both deliver strong performances. Several supporting characters are also memorable, including the young daughter, her mother, a captured teenage girl, and a neighbor. Willis was brought in for his recognition and completed all of his scenes in just one day, which is apparent. However, given how small his part is, it’s not a significant issue. Megan Fox wasn't cast because of acting prowess, but rather because of her appearance. Still, I thought she did well overall, aside from a couple of scenes with Willis that felt rushed. Regarding Fox, it had been ten years since I’d seen her in a film. She was 34 during filming and looked more attractive than ever. Meanwhile, Caitlin Carmichael, who was nearing 16 during production, also gave a surprisingly noteworthy performance as the teenage captive. Sistine Rose Stallone (Sylvester's daughter) is another female performer worth mentioning. The final section manages to build some genuine suspense. While it’s naturally a dark film that explores the unpleasant aspects of life, there are moments of reverence, wisdom and hope. Musician Machine Gun Kelly appears in several scenes with Fox. He must have charmed her, because she was married for ten years to Brian Austin Green at the time, but they began dating shortly after and are now engaged. The film’s length is 1 hour, 39 minutes, and it was filmed in Pensacola, Puerto Rico, and Cincinnati (filming was paused midway through due to the pandemic, requiring adjustments to complete production).
