It’s hard to deny that *Midnight Cowboy* is a remarkable film. I’ve often noticed it appearing in online discussions and those curated “favorites” lists on Letterboxd, but thankfully I went into it without any prior knowledge, which I think always makes for the ideal viewing experience. The only thing I was aware of beforehand was Dustin Hoffman's presence; I wasn't even certain it was Jon Voight in the lead role until he started making those very recognizable expressions – a truly distinctive look! My familiarity with him is mostly limited to his work in the film *Holes* from 2003, where he certainly left an impression. Voight delivers a performance just as strong as Hoffman’s. They have wonderful chemistry together, and I really appreciated watching their friendship develop; it only served to make the inevitable, looming ending even more disheartening. The supporting actors deserve recognition too. The film's musical score is excellent, although that familiar Harry Nilsson song feels slightly overplayed. I also wasn’t aware that the “I’m walkin’ here” line originated from this movie – I’m evidently not great at remembering film quotes – but it was a neat surprise to hear it unexpectedly.
