_Michael Collins_, as with many sprawling historical films, leans on melodrama and presents a slanted perspective regarding recent history. A significant portion of the criticism directed at it stemmed from challenging widely held beliefs, whether those supporting an empire or Irish republicanism—beliefs that were equally biased. Neil Jordan confronted difficult questions about how history is written and the ethical dilemmas involved in portraying historical events. He recognized that any depiction of the past necessitates choices and even some degree of alteration, particularly when attempting to secure funding and attract audiences. Despite this, the era and setting prove too intricate for Jordan to fully illuminate or for Collins’s story to encompass.
