Michael, played wonderfully by John Travolta, is an unusual Archangel on what seems to be his final assignment (a vacation?). A tabloid newspaper based in Chicago dispatches a group to Iowa hoping for a story and photographs; upon realizing he’s an actual angel, they want to take him back to the city. The film's greatest strength lies in its nature as a lighthearted road trip movie. William Hurt, Andie MacDowell, and Robert Pastorelli seem to have a great time encountering Michael and attempting to guide him back to Chicago. He behaves like a tourist, clearly enjoying himself and wanting to visit those quirky roadside attractions—like "the world's biggest non-stick frying pan"—that many adults would typically dismiss. Numerous amusing events and miracles occur during their travels. What I noticed most about Michael (the angel) is his authentic sense of joy. He embodies a simple, pure joy for existence, which has a remarkable effect on those he meets. It's something we could all benefit from learning from him. The movie provides plenty of laughs and, unexpectedly, even some moments of depth. The film’s length is 105 minutes, and filming took place in Texas, Iowa, and Chicago. GRADE: A
