This feels like the definitive visual representation of how people are organized. Whether it's about those who manage to survive because they’re strong, smart, cunning, or attractive—or a combination of these qualities—it really highlights humanity’s tendency to create systems where some are considered more important than others (whether that’s deserved or not, but the film perfectly shows this through the matriarchal, god-like robot), and how much better off people would be if everyone were accepted and valued, working together. It also makes it clear that those with intelligence often end up being more successful, comfortable, and powerful than those who do the physical work. So, this amazing story from Fritz Lang transports us to "Metropolis"—a totalitarian society, though perhaps not intentionally evil—where everyone has a specific place and role. Except for the “Master’s” son. Like many young people who are easily bored, he lacks purpose and his empty life makes him open to new ideas. After feeling sorry for an employee recently fired by his father, and then being exposed to a world he never knew existed, the story really picks up speed and becomes very thought-provoking. The music wonderfully leads us from the monotony of daily existence through the liberating revolution that inevitably happens, along with all of its unforeseen and mostly terrible results—like shaking a bottle of champagne; eventually, the cork will come out! It’s also a love story between the son and a woman who is far below him in social standing. There are moments of brightness and optimism—and similar to how a forest fire destroys everything in its path, this film seems to suggest that ultimately hope will prevail and new beginnings will emerge. Also, as a piece of filmmaking, it’s clearly been an influence on countless directors, cinematographers, and storytellers who came after.
