Metropolis stands among the most impressive films ever created. The remarkable production design, inventive camera work, pioneering special effects, and forward-looking narrative combine to make this an essential experience for any movie fan. The story unfolds in a future city called Metropolis, where society is split into two distinct groups: laborers who toil underground operating massive machinery that powers the city, and the wealthy elite who enjoy lives of luxury above ground. Overseeing everything is Joh Fredersen (Alfred Abel), the architect of Metropolis. His son, Freder (Gustav Fröhlich), develops feelings for Maria (Brigitte Helm), a woman from the working class who speaks of an impending figure destined to bring harmony and fairness between the workers and those in power. Joh Fredersen views Maria’s message as a danger to his established system, so he and the inventor Rotwang (Rudolf Klein-Rogge) orchestrate her abduction and create a robotic duplicate bearing her likeness, intending to undermine the laborers' trust in her. However, Rotwang harbors a secret plan: to program the robot to incite the workers into demolishing the city and overthrowing Fredersen, as retribution for a past wrongdoing by Fredersen. Fritz Lang directed this film in 1927, where it was an immediate success. Following its release, the American distributor significantly shortened the film, and the complete original version remained missing for many years. The full version was rediscovered in Argentina in 2008 (in a damaged but viewable state), serving as the foundation for a restored reconstruction released in 2010. If you decide to watch this movie—and I strongly urge you to do so—that’s the version you should seek out! Truly, Metropolis is an exceptionally wonderful film that deserves your attention.
