Merry Christmas is a well-done film from Sriram Raghavan, featuring a romance that’s also an intricately designed mystery. Following films aimed at more adult viewers like Andhadhun and Badlapur, he offers a Christmas-themed project that’s both captivating and enjoyable. Merry Christmas tells the story of two strangers who are drawn to each other, unfolding into a bloody thriller after the intermission. It belongs to a specific type of slow-paced thriller that requires focus and isn't for those wanting constant action. The first half primarily builds anticipation for the intense events in the second half. With strong performances from Vijay Sethupathy, Katrina Kaif, and tight editing, Sriram Raghavan delivers a film with genuine emotion and a satisfying conclusion that makes the wait worthwhile. The music by Pritam is enchanting, particularly Papon’s “Nazar Teri Toofan” and Arijit’s “Raat Akeli Thi,” which are skillfully woven into the story. I had doubts about Vijay and Katrina together, but how naturally and beautifully their romance develops in the first half highlights why Raghavan is so highly regarded. Vijay Sethupathy charms with his signature dry wit and expressive face. Katrina demonstrates a strong grasp of her Hindi lines and has given a performance she can be proud of. Vinay Pathak and Pratima Kannan, in extended appearances, add to the excitement leading up to the climax. Baby Pari Sharma is also quite endearing. There are a few things to consider before seeing Merry Christmas. Don't compare it to Andhadhun; it’s a completely different narrative. It shouldn't be strictly labeled as a thriller either—it's a romantic comedy that evolves into a dark thriller. A more mature audience is needed to appreciate this film, and it won't appeal to everyone. I do admire Raghavan's incorporation of neo-noir elements with surprising twists and impressive moments in the second half.
