A woman who’s part American goes back to Italy to take possession of her family's castle, and she and a friend find themselves uneasily connected with a traveling carnival group headed by an attractive, mysterious man. "Meridian” (1990), sometimes called “Kiss of the Beast” or "Phantoms," is a romantic drama/fantasy set in a castle, featuring supernatural and even horror aspects. The most impressive thing about it might be the setting itself – the castle and especially the garden filled with huge statues – plus the two female leads. The actresses are shown completely nude on occasion (so viewers who would be bothered by that should avoid it), but the director and cinematographer didn’t seem to know what to do with them; they just couldn't manage to photograph beautiful women well. There’s a surprising, outdated element in the film that wouldn’t be acceptable now and is pretty strange when you consider it (I won’t spoil what it is). Also, the explanation of how someone can break a 400-year curse is silly and almost destroys the movie on its own. It feels like something written by someone who writes poorly-written romance or fantasy stories. The film has a running time of one hour and twenty-six minutes and was filmed at Castello di Giove, which is about a seventy-five minute drive north of Rome, as well as Bomarzo (the statue garden), located roughly seven miles west of the castle.
