An Irish criminal organization seizes control of a Washington hospital after their leader is injured during an encounter with police. A doctor, possessing a military background, provides assistance to law enforcement from within the facility (Leah Gibson). Jon Voight appears in the role of the Irish crime boss. “Mercy” (2023) functions as a brisk crime story reminiscent of “Die Hard,” although it operates on a smaller scale and features a female lead instead of Bruce Willis. Leah Gibson delivers a noteworthy performance, representing one of the primary motivations for watching this relatively small-scale production, which was made with a $5 million investment. I’m only familiar with her work in “The Devil’s Ground,” from 14 years ago, where she possessed a similar recognizable facial appearance but seemed considerably thinner; thankfully, she has gained weight and looks very good wearing fitted jeans. Her attractiveness is showcased throughout the film without veering into exploitative territory. A further strength of “Mercy” lies in its conservative viewpoint. Assessments from critics seem overly harsh, as it successfully provides what’s expected if you're seeking a fast-paced action movie. The runtime clocks in at 1 hour and 25 minutes, and the film was likely filmed around the Seattle area—the Space Needle is visible in some shots. I use the word ‘likely’ because details regarding filming locations are unavailable to me. GRADE: B-
