Menace II Society provides ninety minutes of action! It’s a film I enjoyed watching, and while the story follows a familiar path—with a few exceptions early on—it does succeed in landing some significant blows. The characters aren’t particularly appealing, but it's still straightforward to empathize with their situation. Tyrin Turner is convincing as the main character, and Larenz Tate and Jada Pinkett (Smith) stand out among the supporting cast; she, frankly, delivers the strongest performances of the central players. Aside from Pinkett’s work, I felt the acting wasn't flawless—it wasn’t poor in any way, but some of the other actors seemed awkward at times. It was nice to see Samuel L. Jackson involved, even if his role was small. The ending, while decent and perfectly acceptable, did bother me a bit. I won’t reveal what transpires, but Caine's final actions don't entirely add up; it's clear they went with that approach because it seemed dramatic when written down. Did anyone else think he put the younger character in an absurdly dangerous position? It pulled me out of the moment, I have to admit. All things considered, this 1993 film is quite good. I simply had a few (small but noticeable) reservations about it.
