Men, from director Alex Garland, proves disappointing given its promise, though it isn't without some positive attributes. However, this strength diminishes later on; the filmmaker shifts focus toward horror tropes reminiscent of slasher films and home invasion scenarios rather than maintaining a psychological approach. The sound design is well-executed, contributing significantly to the film's disturbing atmosphere. The performances are adequate but unremarkable—nothing truly stood out for me. Still, the body horror sequences are exceptionally well done, eliciting a visceral reaction. While I don’t believe it was entirely necessary, credit must be given where it’s due. Regrettably, the writing is quite poor. The film's point feels heavy-handed and convoluted, failing to resonate with me. It proved off-putting, as it appeared the director intended to convey that all men are fundamentally flawed. I understand there was likely a deeper meaning at play, but this superficial message remains undeniable. Frankly, every individual she meets seems utterly awful; not one person offered assistance. A significant issue for me was how the film begins as an imaginative psychological horror before abruptly changing direction in the third act to incorporate body horror and slasher elements, which detracts from the engaging first forty-five minutes. This is compounded by uneven pacing that leaves the viewer feeling like they’re simply waiting for the movie to conclude.
