Following a bereavement—the apparent suicide of her husband, James—Harper (Jessie Buckley) retreats to the countryside in Gloucestershire, England, renting a manor house for two weeks. Upon arrival, she’s greeted by Geoffrey (Rory Kinnear), who embodies the stereotypical country gentleman. During a walk, she realizes someone is tracking her; this person turns out to be completely nude. Returning home unsettled, she discovers that this incident is only the beginning of increasingly strange events in the small village. My main issue with the film stems from the fact that every member of the community—the police officer, the vicar, a schoolboy, and the pub landlord—appears as variations of the same person: Kinnear. However, Harper doesn’t seem to notice or acknowledge this; and for me, it's a significant problem. If I found myself in a village where everyone looked identical, I would have left immediately. Despite her unease, she remains while the situation escalates, becoming increasingly aware that she is the target of some malevolent force—culminating in a rather clever display of special effects, though not much else. There’s an underdeveloped subplot concerning difficulties in her marriage that might have influenced the ending, but I was frankly tired of its constant revisiting by that point. The cinematography of the landscapes is pleasant enough, and Buckley delivers a capable performance, but Kinnear's appearances are really a showcase for the makeup artists’ talents. The dialogue isn't particularly memorable, forcing the musical score to work overtime in an attempt to generate a sense of danger that I ultimately found insufficient. It isn’t any worse than many recent films from Blumhouse Productions, but it doesn’t elevate it to being truly good either.
