Kamurai on Men in Black II

6/10 · Aug 27, 2020

It's an acceptable film, but I don’t foresee me revisiting it, and I would only suggest it to those who were very fond of the initial installment and can’t access *Men in Black: International*. The movie even begins by delicately illustrating why the established structure falls apart without Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith; honestly, Patrick Warburton would have been a fantastic addition. It's an odd case because the acting is solid, the core idea and antagonist are intriguing, and the narrative is well-crafted for a while. Rosario Dawson’s presence always elevates things, but this one just doesn’t quite hit the mark. It seems they fumble when attempting to replicate elements from the first film—sometimes repeating them directly—and Agent K feels awkwardly inserted, with an ultimately disappointing conclusion. Perhaps an extra scene afterward could have helped, though the story is told entirely from the perspective of MIB agents on a distant planet. The central danger also feels strange. They might have developed a slow-burn mystery, but instead they imposed a time limit and hurried things along, making it only marginally engaging and preventing any meaningful connections or deductions. Then, when they supposedly solve it, the explanation is abrupt; there’s no insight into why, how, or what events preceded it. It's as though information appears out of nowhere, followed by an equally unmotivated response. The original film simply surpasses this one, and *Men in Black: International* offers a more enjoyable experience.
