Wuchak on Men in Black II

6/10 · May 24, 2020

This follow-up is enjoyable, though it doesn't quite reach the heights of the initial film. Tommy Lee Jones, Will Smith, and Rip Torn are back in this installment, which centers on a covert government organization situated in New York City that handles encounters with alien life visiting our planet. Similar to its 1997 predecessor, "Men in Black II" (released in 2002) provides amusement and excitement during the first portion; however, it falters somewhat later on when some of the humor doesn't land as well. Those who experienced the original might not feel compelled to see this one, but for those seeking more of the same with minor changes, it’s worth a look. It isn't the stronger film in the series, yet it still delivers what you want from lighthearted and exciting entertainment. The cast has shifted; Linda Fiorentino is no longer present, with Lara Flynn Boyle taking on the role of the antagonist and Rosario Dawson appearing as a pizzeria worker who attracts Jay’s attention. Paige Brooks also makes a brief appearance in a few scenes. Subsequent films include "Men in Black 3" (2012) and "Men in Black: International" (2019); the last-mentioned is unique within the franchise because it doesn't feature Tommy Lee Jones or Will Smith. The movie has a running time of 1 hour, 28 minutes, and filming took place in New York City and its environs—such as Fire Island for the Post Office scene—as well as Los Angeles, Culver City, and Pasadena. GRADE: B-/C+
