It’s funny how fitting the title is, and what a terrible beginning that marriage has. The film opens with gorgeous imagery of planets colliding, before dropping us into a ridiculously awkward situation: Kirsten Dunst as "Justine" and Alexander Skarsgård as "Michael," trapped in an enormous white limousine struggling to find their way down country roads to their wedding. They finally arrive on foot, quite late, and Justine’s mother, "Gaby" (Charlotte Rampling), gives a speech expressing her dislike of marriage—a feeling stemming from serious problems with her former husband, "John" (Kiefer Sutherland). This immediately establishes the tone for an often very intense exploration of how depression can creep in and completely dominate people's lives. It’s definitely not a happy movie, but it feels genuine – and both Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg as her new mother-in-law, "Claire," are excellent, helping us understand just how meaningful those initial scenes turn out to be. Arguments are frequent, and things get heated, particularly when Justine speaks frankly to her employer and best man, "Jack" (Stellan Skarsgård). The film finds a measure of peace in its second half, which focuses on “Claire,” and is helped along by the presence of young "Leo" (Cameron Spurr), who provides a sense of stability. Be ready for a deliberate pace; events unfold slowly, though with considerable impact. I believe this could be Dunst’s finest performance. As with many Lars von Trier films, it gets better each time you watch it, so I'd recommend giving it two or three viewings to fully appreciate these complex and cleverly constructed—though somewhat dismantled—characters.
