Reno on Megan Leavey

8/10 · Feb 4, 2018

The ideal ending for every heroic figure involves a “happily ever after”! Coming from the filmmaker behind 'Blackfish', this project had the potential to be another worthwhile documentary, but ultimately it was a sensible decision to present it as a full-length movie. It’s a biographical film and a war drama centered on a young woman who enlisted in the U.S. military and formed a strong bond with a military dog. They both served during the Iraq War before being separated, prompting her to advocate for the dog's custody, particularly after its retirement from service. It's a heartwarming story about the connection between humans and animals. While you’ve likely encountered many films featuring dogs, this one stands apart and is truly excellent. Individuals should have the freedom to make their own choices and the ability to change direction whenever they wish—that’s fundamental in a democracy. However, that right isn't extended to animals, particularly those considered human property under any governing system. It seems wrong that animals are involved in human conflicts! Many forms of animal exploitation have been outlawed, but this practice continues legally. While it might be acceptable now, as someone who cares about animals, I hope it will eventually be recognized as cruel. Regardless, if you’re a pet or dog enthusiast, this is one you should see. Those who've experienced the companionship of a dog will likely find themselves feeling more connected to the story. The narrative unfolds from Megan Leavey's point of view, but Rex, the dog, emerges as the true hero—both in reality and on screen. I’ve watched several films featuring Kate Mara, but this one showcases her strongest performance; she carries much of the film without a large ensemble cast, and does so admirably. It has some emotional moments and is suitable for viewers of all ages. Notably, it's a stylish movie that isn't a romance or comedy—it’s on par with films generally geared toward male audiences. _8/10_
