Megalopolis presents itself as a sweeping film exploring several complex ideas, though Coppola’s depiction of rebuilding civilization highlights both its impressive scope and problems with how it was put together. The movie boasts striking imagery and features skilled performers, but the story becomes weighed down by too many metaphors and philosophical comparisons, making for an experience that is stimulating yet disorienting and unfocused. The disagreement between Cesar and Cicero provides some interesting parts, however, the depth of these concepts frequently gets lessened because of the film’s overwhelming intricacy. It's a disheartening letdown; even coming from a director with Coppola’s reputation, it still struggles with issues that are common in movies being made today. Rating: C-
