The moment arrived for "Greg" (Ben Stiller) to encounter his girlfriend “Pam’s” (Teri Polo) parents. His intentions included marriage; he even purchased a ring. However, when the airline forced him to check luggage and then misplaced it, compounded by an incident involving vomit, he briefly considered avoiding the meeting altogether. Undeterred, he met "Jack" (Robert De Niro) and "Dina" (Blythe Danner), and that's where his difficulties truly began. Instead of pleasant family conversation, “Greg” found himself subjected to intense scrutiny from his future mother-in-law, and it became apparent that he hadn’t been entirely forthcoming with "Pam," including details about his feelings toward cats. He is also a male nurse known as "Focker"—a detail which didn't improve his situation. As the weekend unfolded, “Greg” seemed to move from one bad circumstance to another; he damaged an heirloom urn, received stitches from her brother "Denny" (Jon Abrahams), and I suspect that if I were in his place, I would have simply left, regardless of my feelings for her. Danner consistently brings a subtle presence to comedic roles, using expressions and gestures to convey approval or disapproval with remarkable effectiveness, and she complements De Niro’s controlling nature, which is the primary source of humor in this film. It's not laugh-out-loud hilarious, and there’s an excessive amount of talking, but when De Niro exhibits his most manipulative and playful side, it makes the movie worthwhile. Who can argue with a bit of Peter, Paul & Mary?
