A nurse from Chicago (Ben Stiller) is planning to propose to his girlfriend (Teri Polo), but he needs to travel to Long Island first to get acquainted with her parents, portrayed by Robert De Niro and Blythe Danner. “Meet the Parents” (2001) works well as a romantic comedy; Stiller does a solid job playing an ordinary guy thrown into a difficult situation that many men can understand. The initial portion is funny because Greg encounters his girlfriend’s parents, sensing that the father isn't fond of him. However, this only serves to build up to the chaotic events in the latter part of the film as things go wrong. Teri Polo looks good, and Nicole DeHuff appears as the sister. A well-known actor from that era makes an appearance later on, but I’m going to leave that a secret because it's a pleasant surprise (though it probably won’t be too hard to guess given that it’s a Ben Stiller movie). The follow-up, “Meet the Fockers,” was released four years afterward and is considerably worse, filled with tasteless jokes about sex from older people. It felt like a letdown for the actors involved. The film's length is 1 hour, 48 minutes, and filming took place primarily on Long Island in Old Brookville and Oyster Bay. GRADE: B+
