CinemaSerf on Meet Joe Black

6/10 · Feb 8, 2024

Parrish, a billionaire played by Sir Anthony Hopkins, isn’t doing well as his birthday nears and a major business merger hangs in the balance. His daughter Sarah, portrayed by Claire Forlani, is interested in one of his employees, Drew, who's instrumental in securing the profitable deal. Parrish's health declines, and after what seems like a heart attack, he encounters a new figure. Brad Pitt appears as a blonde man with striking eyes, whose role becomes apparent to the audience but not yet to Parrish. He’s quickly called "Joe Black" and begins acting as a mentor for the older man, who lacks understanding of how things operate. “Black” increasingly inserts himself into the mogul's life, leading to disruption because his actions differ from those that brought Parrish success. This creates frustration for the driven Drew, but even more so when “Black” starts showing interest in Sarah—an affection that’s gradually returned. Parrish eventually recognizes who this charming and appealing companion is and worries about how his daughter will react if she discovers the truth. The question becomes whether they can balance what needs to happen with what they desire. It's a fundamentally sound story, and there's an engaging relationship between Pitt and Hopkins. However, it’s excessively lengthy; trimming an hour wouldn’t harm the narrative. The film feels like a three-act play that takes too long to gain momentum, ultimately saved by a wonderfully secretive final thirty minutes. It’s visually appealing but overly reliant on dialogue, making it feel like a slog at times and preventing full enjoyment.
