It's easy to understand why many viewers might dislike this movie; it doesn’t cater to typical American tastes or attention spans. If you went in expecting a standard Western with plenty of action and shootouts, you will be disappointed. Even someone hoping for something predictable and conventional like Power of the Dog would find this film jarring. It really isn't a Western at all. It is more accurately described as an intense psychological drama that unfolds through subtle means. There are no easy explanations provided; it’s intended to be experienced and absorbed on a subconscious level. The deliberate, slow rhythm and expansive, desolate visuals create a feeling of loneliness and despair that permeates the film. What's truly compelling is how the characters react to the challenges they face. I found myself completely engrossed.
